At 1515 Hermann Drive in the heart of Houston’s Museum District lies The Health Museum — a place where science, curiosity and hands-on fun converge. Whether you’re a child gazing wide-eyed at a giant beating heart, a teen intrigued by cell biology, or an adult exploring the mysteries of the human body, this museum offers something memorable. With its interactive exhibits, programs and commitment to health literacy, The Health Museum stands out as a must-see destination for families, students and anyone drawn to the fascinating inner workings of our bodies.
A Brief History & Mission
The museum traces its roots back to November 16, 1969, when it opened inside the Houston Museum of Natural Science as the “Museum of Medical Science.” After more than two decades, a dedicated facility was constructed: in March 1996 the museum moved into the John P. McGovern Building at the current Hermann Drive address.
In late 2001 it was officially renamed after McGovern, and later re-branded as The Health Museum.
Today, it operates as a Smithsonian Affiliate and a member institution of the sprawling Texas Medical Center, with a mission to foster wonder and curiosity about health, medical science and the human body.
What You’ll See & Do
When you walk through the doors, you’ll notice immediately that this is not a quiet glass-case museum—it’s one you’re invited to walk into, touch, explore.
- The Amazing Body Gallery
Perhaps the most iconic experience here: a larger-than-life walkthrough of the human body featuring a 22-foot backbone, rib-cage tunnels, a Texas-sized brain, and a beating heart whose chambers you can stand near and observe. - DeBakey Cell Lab
Opened in 2015, this bilingual, hands-on lab lets visitors engage in real biology experiments—studying cells, skin scraping, typing “blood” and more. It’s rare for a museum to offer such direct science-lab access. - Traveling & Special Exhibits
From BODY WORLDS 101 to “Your Body, Your Air” (exploring environmental health in Houston), the museum rotates engaging content that appeals to all ages. - Programs, Camps & Events
Beyond static exhibits, you’ll find dissection demonstrations, teen medical summits, scout badge programs, craft-science events and free admission hours for families. - Free Family Thursday
Every Thursday from 2 pm to 5 pm (reservations required) the museum offers free admission, making it an excellent value for families.

Why This Museum Stands Out

Educational Innovation: It’s not just about reading about the body—it’s about traveling through the body, manipulating real labs, engaging young minds in STEM.
Accessible Science: Whether you’re age 5 or 50, the exhibits speak to all levels. The Free Family Thursday program makes it financially accessible.
Local Connection: Being in Houston—a city with a world-class medical complex and a diverse population—the museum reflects both global science and local health themes (like air quality, disease prevention, tissue research).
Engaging for All: It’s family-friendly, but also offers deeper programming for teens, students, educators and adults interested in health sciences.
A Destination Beyond Typical Museums: Exhibits are immersive; you’re physically moving through human anatomy. That sets it apart from many traditional “look-but-don’t-touch” museums.
A Bit of History Worth Noting
This museum’s story reveals how health education evolved in Houston. Starting in 1969 within another museum, it sought to carve out its own identity. The successful capital campaign allowed a dedicated building in 1996. The addition of the bilingual DeBakey Cell Lab in 2015 reflects a commitment to reach broader audiences.
Today, with its strong connection to the Texas Medical Center and the Museum District, The Health Museum exemplifies how interactive science has become integral to cultural and educational tourism in Houston.
Visitor Vibes: What You’ll Actually Feel
As you step in, there’s a tangible sense of movement—either strolling through a giant artery of the body or gathering around a lab station to explore cells. Children may run through rib-cage tunnels, teens may opt for the more scientific hands-on experiences, and adults may pause at environmental health exhibits considering how Houston’s air or lifestyle affects the body. The museum pulses with energy and curiosity.
You’ll hear excited voices, see wheels of anatomy diagrams, watch volunteers guiding sessions and glimpse families working through exhibits together. The vibe is less “quiet museum” and more “interactive playground of science”.
Why It’s Worth the Visit
Whether you’re a Houston native or visiting the city, The Health Museum offers something few other places do: a chance to engage with your body, your health and your curiosity in a vivid, participatory way. It’s ideal for families wanting a fun educational stop, schools planning field trips, or adults interested in science popularization.
Here’s what makes it especially worth your time:
- Interactive learning: From bones to brain to cells, you’re part of the experience.
- Accessible & fun: Free admission hours and exhibits that appeal to all ages.
- Complementary to the Museum District: Pair with nearby parks, museums, or the zoo for a full day.
- Thought-provoking themes: Exhibits engage with current health issues (pollution, wellness, anatomy) which makes the visit timely, not just nostalgic.
Final Thoughts
In a city known for space travel, energy innovation and medical excellence, The Health Museum brings the human story home—right to your body, your choices, your curiosity. Whether you walk through a giant heart, peer into a cell lab, or join a free admission day, you’ll leave with more than a souvenir—you’ll leave with a sense of awe, maybe a question, and a new perspective on the body that carries you.
Make time for this gem in Houston’s Museum District. Science, in all its complexity and wonder, is on full display—and you’re not just observing; you’re experiencing it.
